A RESOURCE CURRICULUM IN DRIVER AND TRAFFIC SAFETY EDUCATION

A RESOURCE CURRICULUM FOR DRIVER EDUCATION ATTEMPTS TO IDENTIFY AND USE KNOWN ELEMENTS OF THE DRIVING TASK AS A BASIS FOR CONTENT. CONTENT SELECTED IN THIS WAY HAS ROOTS BOTH IN RESEARCH FINDINGS AND CAREFULLY CONCEIVED RATIONALES. MUCH OF THIS DOCUMENT IS DEVOTED TO SPECIFIC ITEMS IN A DRIVER EDUCATION COURSE. THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED BY UNITS: BASIC CONTROL TASKS; INTERACTING WITH OTHER HIGHWAY USERS; CRITICAL SITUATIONS; CONTROLLING THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIGHWAY COLLISIONS; OPERATOR FITNESS; VEHICLE READINESS; TRIP PLAN; SELF IMPROVEMENT AND SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS. EACH UNIT IS SUB-DIVIDED BY EPISODES WHICH CONTAIN A STATEMENT OF EPISODE PURPOSE. EACH EPISODE HAS A MATRIX OF SEGMENT NUMBER, CONCEPTS, OBJECTIVES--STUDENT BEHAVIOR, AND LEARNING ACTIVITES AND RESOURCES. MOST EPISODES HAVE A CORRESPONDING SECTION ON CONTENT. METHODS OF TEACHING DRIVER EDUCATION AND TRAFFIC SAFETY ARE DISCUSSED. /SRIS/
