EACH YEAR, ABOUT 2,000 PERSONS ARE KILLED, ANOTHER 15 MILLION INJURED, WITH TOTAL PROPERTY LOSSES OF 100 MILLION DOLLARS AT RAILROAD GRADE CROSSINGS IN THE UNITED STATES. TEN FORMULAS ARE GIVEN FOR CALCULATING A HAZARD INDEX FOR RAILROAD CROSSINGS. ONE OF IMPORTANT FACTORS APPEARING IN EVERY FORMULA IS THE COMMUNICATIONS AND/OR CONTROL FUNCTION AT THE CROSSING.
