PEUGEOT SHOCK-SEAT

THE DISADVANTAGE OF SEAT-BELTS IS KNOWN: RISKS OF RUPTURE IN CASE OF SEVERE SHOCK, RESTITUTION OF ENERGY BY THE WEBBING, WHIP-LASHING, NON-RATIONAL LOADING OF THE THORAX. PEUGEOT'S STUDY CENTER HAS RECONSIDERED THE PROBLEM OF RESTRAINTS FOR THE PASSENGERS IN CASE OF ACCIDENTS. IT IS POSSIBLE TO PALLIATE THESE DEFECTS OF SEAT-BELTS: (1) BY FITTING; AT THE ANCHORAGE OF BELTS, OF AN ENERGY ABSORBER WITH POLYURETHANE RESTITUTING ONLY 0.5% OF THE SHOCK KINETIC ENERGY AND (2) WITH A SHOCK-SEAT, IN WHICH THE PASSENGER IS BINDED BY A TEXTILE RESTRAINT. DURING THE SHOCK, THE SEAT ROTATES FRONTWARDS AND IS SLOWED DOWN BY AN ENERGY ABSORBING DEVICE. IN THE LATTER SYSTEM, DECELERATIONS ARE TWICE OR THREE TIMES WEAKER THAN WITH SEAT-BELTS AND THE RISK OF WHIP LASHING DISAPPEARS COMPLETELY. NO RUPTURE DUE TO FRONTAL COLLISION HAS BEEN REGISTERED FOR SPEEDS TO 48 KM/H.
