GLARE AND DRIVER VISION

A BASIC INVESTIGATION OF AUTOMOTIVE REFLECTED GLARE WAS UNDERTAKEN TO SERVE AS A FOUNDATION FOR WORK LEADING ULTIMATELY TO A SET OF FEDERAL SPECIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS ON THE SUBJECT. A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE SHOWED THAT PREVIOUS WORK ON GLARE, DEALING MAINLY WITH INTERIOR ILLUMINATION, HAS VERY LIMITED APPLICATION TO THE AUTOMOTIVE PROBLEM, AND THAT MUCH NEW EMPIRICAL DATA IS REQUIRED TO ESTABLISH THE PROPER GLARE FORMULAE AND RELATIONSHIPS FOR THE APPLICABLE CONDITIONS. OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SITUATION ARE SUCH FACTORS AS THE EXTRAFOVEAL VISUAL FIELD OF THE DRIVER'S FIELD OF VIEW. SOME EXPLORATORY SUBJECTIVE TESTS IN THE LABORATORY INDICATE THAT THE DISABLING EFFECTS OF GLARE CAN BE GAUGED IN TERMS OF CHANGES IN EXTRA-FOVEAL CONTRAST SENSITIVITY. A GENERAL METHOD IS OUTLINED FOR MAKING REFLECTED-GLARE EVALUATIONS OF HYPOTHETICAL VEHICULAR SURFACES FROM DESIGN DATA AND FOR MAKING COMPLIANCE MEASUREMENTS ON COMPLETED VEHICLES. A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF 262 CITATIONS IS ALSO INCLUDED.
