SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENTS
WHILE THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH AS AN ALLY OF TRAFFIC SAFETY IS EVIDENT, THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM THIS RESOURCE HAS NOT HAD WIDESPREAD APPLICATION. THIS PAMPHLET IS DESIGNED TO OVERCOME THIS DEFICIENCY IN ONE AREA OF TRAFFIC SAFETY RESEARCH. IT BRINGS TOGETHER MAJOR RESEARCH FINDINGS ON ONE-CAR ACCIDENTS GROWING OUT OF A NUMBER OF INDEPENDENT RESEARCH EFFORTS CONDUCTED IN RECENT YEARS. SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS CONSTITUTE A CONSIDERABLE PROPORTION OF ALL ACCIDENTS, ESPECIALLY ON FREEWAYS. MORE THAN TWO OUT OF FIVE RURAL MOTOR VEHICLE DEATHS INVOLVE A SINGLE VEHICLE. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO INFORM, IN LAY LANGUAGE, THE LEGISLATOR, THE PUBLIC OFFICIAL, AND THE INTERESTED READER ABOUT THE SERIOUSNESS OF SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS AND THEIR PROBABLE CAUSES. STEPS ARE SUGGESTED THAT MIGHT BE TAKEN TO REDUCE OUR ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE IN THIS TYPE OF TRAFFIC MISHAP. /AUTHOR/
