THE DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, STUDY ON CARBON MONOXIDE, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS IN FATAL SINGLE VEHICLE AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS
RESULTS OF STUDIES ON ALCOHOL, CARBON MONOXIDE AND DRUGS IN FATAL ACCIDENTS REVEAL (1) 70% OF TESTED DRIVERS KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENTS HAD BEEN DRINKING, (2) OF 250 DRIVERS WHO HAD CHEMICAL EVIDENCE OF DRINKING, 197 HAD A BLOOD LEVEL OF MORE THAN 0.10%, WHICH MEANS THAT THERE IS A SUBSTANTIAL HARD CORE OF HEAVY DRINKERS, (3) IN CARBON MONOXIDE TESTING OF 171 DRIVERS WHO WERE FATALITIES, 132 HAD BLOOD SATURATIONS OF 0 TO 9%, 26 OF 10% TO 19%, AND 13 OF 20% TO 28%, (4) DRUGS ARE AN INFREQUENT FINDING AS FAR AS ROUTINE ULTRAVIOLET SPECTROGRAPHIC ANALYSIS IS CONCERNED, AND (5) WITH THE WIDESPREAD UTILIZATION OF TRANQUILIZERS AND OTHER DRUGS, THERE IS A NEED FOR APPLICATION OF ADDITIONAL CHEMICAL PROCEDURES AS PART OF ROUTINE TESTING.
