A PREVIEW PREDICTOR MODEL OF DRIVER BEHAVIOR IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
A CLOSED-LOOP NONLINEAR DRIVER CONTOL MATHEMATICAL MODEL WAS DEVELOPED TO ENALBE A BETTER DEFINITION OF EMERGENCY AND PREIMPACT CONDITIONS, PARTICULARLY OF SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENTS. A MODEL OF THE DRIVER WAS COMBINED WITH AN EXISTING VEHICLE MODEL TO PERMIT COMPARISONS OF SIMULATED RESPONSES WITH EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING MANEUVERS AT OR NEAR THE UPPER LIMITS OF VEHICLE AND DRIVER CONTROL. SPECIFIC INPUT PARAMETER VALUES AND RANGES HAVE YET TO BE DETERMINED, HOWEVER, APPROXIMATE VALUES HAVE BEEN OBTAINED BY QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS. PRELIMINARY TESTS WERE MADE TO DETERMINE IF THE MODEL BEHAVED IN A "REASONABLE" MANNER RESULTS WERE: (1) IN THE EMERGENCY LANE CHANGE MODE INCREASING THE NUMBER OF SAMPLE POINTS ALONG THE PROJECTED PATH UP TO A MAXIMUM OF SEVEN CAUSED SMOOTHING OF MODEL OUTPUT AND VARYING THE CONTROL GAIN DEMONSTRATED ALL REGIONS OF STABILITY. (2) IN THE SPEED CHANGE AND SPEED MAINTENANCE MODES, THERE WERE DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN DESIRED DISTANCES AND ACTUAL DISTANCES FOR BOTH ACCELERATIONS AND DECELERA- TIONS. (3) INCREASES IN VEHICLE SLIP ANGLE AND YAW VELOCITY DURING BRAKING IN A TURNING MANEUVER WERE NOT SUFFICIENT TO INDUCE SKIDDING; THEREFORE THE DRIVER MODEL WAS NOT EXERCISED FOR THE SKID RECOVERY MODE. /AUTHOR/
