REPAVER
A 3.93 MILE SECTION OF 4-LANE U.S. 64 WAS REPAVED TO CORRECT THE SLICK SURFACE WHICH RESULTED FROM EXCESS ASPHALT. THE EXISTING PAVEMENT ALSO HAD MINOR CRACKING AND CORDUROY. THE PROCESS OF REPAVING, USING A MACHINE MANUFACTRED BY THE CUTLER REPAVING COMPANY, CONSISTS ESSENTIALLY OF SIX STEPS ALL PERFORMED AS AN IN-LINE OPERATION WITH ONE PASS OF THE MACHINE: (1) HEATING EXISTING PAVEMENT; (2) SCARIFYING THE PAVEMENT SURFACE; (3) REPROCESSING THE OLD MIX, (4) RELAYING AND LEVELLING THE REPROCESSED MATERIAL, (5) OVERLAYING THE NEW HOT-MIX MATERIAL; AND (6) COMPACTING THE REPAVED SURFACE. AVERAGE PRODUCTION WAS NEAR 5000 SQ. YDS. PER DAY AT A COST OF $76.74 PER SQUARE YARD. ALTHOUGH THIS IS SOMEWHAT HIGHER THAN THE AVERAGE COST OF 0. 60 PER SQUARE YARD FOR CONVENTIONAL OVERLAYS, THE EFFECTIVE OVERLAY GAINED BY SCARIFYING AND REPROCESSING MORE THAN COMPENSATES FOR THE ADDITIONAL COST.
