DESCRIPTION AND COST COMPARISONS OF MODERN CONCRETE PAVING EQUIPMENT SYSTEMS

THE RESULTS OF A 1968 QUESTIONNAIRE, FIELD OBSERVATIONS OF MAJOR PAVING PROJECTS, AND A COST ANALYSIS OF PAVING EQUIPMENT SYSTEMS ARE PRESENTED IN TABLE FORM. THE QUESTIONNAIRE REVEALED THAT THE USE OF CENTRAL-PLANT-MIXED CONCRETE AND SLIP-FORM PAVING IS INCREASING. IN 1968, 13 MAJOR SLIP-FORM PAVING PROJECTS IN 9 STATES WERE OBSERVED. THE PAVEMENT DESIGNS USED WERE: (1) REFINFORCED PAVEMENT WITH DOWELS, (2) PLAIN PAVEMENT WITH DOWELS, (3) PLAIN PAVEMENT, AND (4) CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED PAVEMENT. EACH PROJECT WAS EVALUATED IN TERMS OF: (1) TYPE AND SIZE OF CONCRETE PLANT, (2) MIXING TIME AND CYCLE TIME, (3) TYPE, SIZE, AND NUMBER OF HAUL UNITS, (4) PAVING EQUIPMENT, (5) PAVING CREW, (6) AVERAGE AND MAXIMUM DAILY PRODUCTION IN LINEAL FEET, (7) LENGTH OF PROJECT PAVING WIDTHS, AND (8) PAVING DEPTH AND DESIGN. A COST ANALYSIS IS DESCRIBED FOR CONCRETE PLANT PRODUCTION, WHICH IS LIMITED BY BOTH SIZE AND MIXING TIME. IF BATCH SIZE IS INCREASED AND BATCH CYCLE IS REDUCED BY DIMINISHING MIXING AND OR CHARGING TIME, COSTS CAN BE REDUCED. ALSO, A METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR OPTIMIZING THE NUMBER OF HAUL UNITS REQUIRED FOR A PROJECT. COST REDUCTIONS CAN BE ACHIEVED IN CONCRETE PAVING BY VARYING DIFFERENT PAVEMENT DESIGNS AND BY MODERNIZING SPECIFICATIONS TO THE USE OF CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES SUCH AS USING MESH PLACER AND USING DOWEL PLACER.
