INTERIM REPORT, STUDIES AND EXPERIMENTAL PROJECTS ON SEAL COATS FOR ARIZONA
OWING TO DETERIORATION OF EMULSION AND CHIP SEAL COATS PLACED ON ARIZONA HIGHWAYS IN THE EARLY 1960'S, A VARIETY OF SURVEYS WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. AS THE RESULTS DID NOT SUPPORT A BROAD APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM, STUDIES WERE COMMENCED IN 1968 ON THE ASPHALTS, AGGREGATES, DESIGN METHODS, AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED. THE STUDIES CONSISTED OF THREE MAIN PARTS: (1) COMPARISON OF THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF TODAY'S ASPHALTS WITH THOSE OF PRE-1957 ASPHALTS; (2) REVIEW OF MODIFICATIONS TO AGGREGATE GRADATIONS AND PRODUCTION METHODS SINCE 1957; AND (3) A LITERATURE VIEW ON SEAL COAT DESIGN METHODS. THE TEST AND SAMPLING METHODS USED IN THE STUDIES ARE DESCRIBED. CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE CONCERNING DESIGN AND APPLICATION OF AGGREGATE, BINDER, PRECOATING, AND SEAL COATS.
