TUNNEL SEALING. PENETRATION OF INJECTION COMPOUND INTO SAND AND NARROW CRACKS
EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED TO INVESTIGATE THE PENETRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT INJECTION MATERIALS IN SAND AND IN NARROW OPENINGS MEASURING 0.05 TO 0.4 MM WIDE. THE INJECTION PRESSURE WAS KEPT LOW, BETWEEN 0.05 AND 0.5 BAR, AND THE EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. FURTHER EXPERIMENTS ARE NEEDED, PARTICULARLY AT LOWER TEMPERATURES. HOWEVER, CERTAIN PRELIMINARY CONCLUSIONS CAN BE DRAWN: INJECTION MATERIALS CONTAINING CEMENT CANNOT SEAL CRACKS NARROWER THAN 0.5 TO 0.6 MM; INJECTION MATERIALS CONTAINING BENTONITE CAN PENETRATE CRACKS AS NARROW AS 0.1 MM, BUT NOT CRACKS FILLED WITH FINE MATERIALS; AND EPOXY OR POLYESTER COMPOUNDS CAN PENETRATE VERY FINE CRACKS AS WELL AS CRACKS FILLED WITH FINE MATERIAL. /AUTHOR/
