A LITERATURE REVIEW OF DUSTING TECHNOLOGY IN DEICING

THE SURVEY REVIEWED SELECTED ABSTRACTS AND MANUSCRIPTS FROM NORTH AMERICA, EUROPE, AND ASIA. THE MAJORITY OF THE STUDIES WERE CARRIED OUT IN THE SOVIET UNION. THE COMMONLY USED DUSTING MATERIALS WERE COAL DUST, CINDERS, FLY ASH, SAND, AND CARBON DUST, AND THE MOST EFFECTIVE GRAIN SIZE WAS 0.2-2.0 MICROMICRONS (.008-.08IN). FOR MAXIMUM RESULTS DUSTING MUST BE CARRIED OUT JUST PRIOR TO NATURAL BREAK-UP OF THE ICE WHILE AIR TEMPTERATURES ARE CLOSE TO 32 DEGREES F. THE STUDIES ARE INDEXED BY COUNTRY, AUTHOR, MATERIALS, CONCENTRATIONS AND THE AVERAGE GRAIN SIZE. THE APPENDICES CONTAIN AN INDEX OF TECHNIQUES AND ABSTRACTS OF THE REVIEWED ARTICLES. /AUTHOR/
