PAVEMENT WEAR DUE TO STUDDED TIRES MEASURED IN THE TEST ROAD MACHINE OF THE NATIONAL SWEDISH ROAD RESEARCH INSTITUTE

STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED IN THE TEST ROAD MACHINE AT THE NATIONAL SWEDISH ROAD RESEARCH INSTITUTE ON PAVEMENT WEAR DUE TO THE INFLUENCE OF STUDDED WINTER TIRES. VARIOUS TYPES OF WEARING COURSES WERE COMPARED WITH RESPECT TO THEIR RESISTANCE TO STUDDED TIRE WEAR. THE RUNS WERE NUMBERED CHRONOLOGICALLY AND MADE TO TEST THE FOLLOWING PAVEMENTS: (1) TOPEKA WITH AND WITHOUT PRE-COATED CHIPPINGS (PCH), ASPHALTIC CONCRETE (AC) AND MASTIC ASPHALT (GUSSASPHALT); (2) TOPEKA WITH AND WITHOUT PCH, AC WITH AND WITHOUT PCH; (3) RIGID PAVEMENTS (PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE, PC); (4) AC WITH PCH AND WITH SURFACE DRESSINGS, AC MADE OF TAR PRE-COATED AGGREGATE, MASTIC ASPHALT WITH PCH; (5) AC WITH AND WITHOUT TAR PRE-COATING, CUT-BACK ASPHALT CONCRETE; (6) AC WITH AND WITHOUT TAR PRE-COATING AND VARIOUS PAVEMENT SAMPLES TAKEN FROM ROADS; AND (7) PCH OF DIFFERENT SIZE AND STRENGTH ROLLED INTO AC. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PAVEMENTS TESTED AND THEIR WEAR ARE LISTED IN TABLES. THE LOWEST WEAR WAS RECORDED FROM PAVEMENTS WITH PRE-COATED CHIPPINGS. THE SECOND BEST RESULTS WERE OBTAINED FROM THE GROUP CONTAINING ADHESIVE AGENTS. THE GREATEST WEAR WAS RECORDED FROM THE PAVEMENTS OF ORDINARY DESIGN. COMPARATIVELY SMALL WEAR WAS MEASURED ON THE SAMPLE OF CUT-BACK ASPHALT CONCRETE TAKEN FROM THE TEST ROAD. IN SWEDEN, A CUT-BACK ASPHALT CONCRETE CONTAINS SUFFICIENT FATTY AMINE TO PROVIDE ACTIVE ADHESION. THE PAVEMENTS WITH PRE-COATED CHIPPINGS INDICATED THAT A STONE-ENRICHED SURFACE MAY WITHSTAND THE WEAR BY STUDDED TIRES VERY WELL. THE RIGID PAVEMENTS TESTED INDICATE THAT A SURFACE RICH IN LARGE AGGREGATE AND LOW IN MORTAR WILL PROMOTE WEAR RESISTANCE. INCREASING THE CONTENT OF LARGE AGGREGATE AND PREVENTING SEGREGATION DURING LAYING CAN ACHIEVE THIS GOOD WEAR RESISTANCE.
