ROAD WEAR DUE TO STUDDED TIRES. MEASUREMENTS OF ROAD PROFILES IN THE STOCKHOLM AREA. PROGRESS REPORT

FIELD MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE OF ROAD PROFILES OF FOUR ASPHALTIC CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS AND A CLOSED RUNWAY AT THE DOMESTIC AIRPORT OF STOCKHOLM WHICH WAS USED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A CLOSED TEST LOOP. THE PROFILE COORDINATES WERE DETERMINED BY MEANS OF A DEPTH GAUGE AND A STRAIGHTEDGE WHICH RESTED ON TWO REFERENCE STUDS ATTACHED TO THE CONCRETE FRAME OF THE BRIDGE. EACH SEASON, A REFERENCE PROFILE WAS TAKEN IN NOVEMBER, JUST BEFORE THE START OF THE STUD SEASON. THE CONCLUDING MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE AT THE END OF MARCH AND THE BEGINNING OF APRIL. COMPUTATION OF WEAR WAS BASED ON THE AREA BETWEEN THE REFERENCE PROFILE AND THE FINAL PROFILE. THIS AREA DIVIDED BY THE LANE WIDTH GIVES THE AVERAGE PROFILE DEPTH. THE EQUATION IS PRESENTED IN WHICH THE SPECIFIC WEAR IN TONS PER MILLION VEHICLE-KILOMETERS IS OBTAINED. EIGHT TEST PAVEMENTS WERE TESTED IN THE AIRPORT TEST LOOP. SINCE CONSIDERABLE FROST HEAVING OCCURS AT THE AIRPORT, THE PROFILE CHANGES DUE TO WEAR HAD TO BE CAREFULLY SEPARATED FROM THOSE DUE TO FROST HEAVING. AN AUTOMATIC PROFILOMETER WAS USED ON THE WHEEL TRACKS ON THE TEST LOOP. A PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE SLAB WAS IMBEDDED IN THE TEST LOOP FROM A CLOSED SECTOR OF A ROAD NEAR STOCKHOLM. THE SPS VALUE OBTAINED IS THE LOWEST VALUE RECORDED IN THE TABLE, INDICATING A CONSIDERABLE WEAR RESISTANCE IN RIGID PAVEMENTS. HOWEVER, THE SLAB HAS A VERY ROUGH SURFACE AFTER ALL THE MORTAR FRACTION IN THE SURFACE HAS BEEN WORN AWAY.
