A STUDY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECK DETERIORATION: REPAIR

A LITERATURE SURVEY, LABORATORY TESTS AND FIELD TESTS WERE EVALUATED TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFECTIVE SYSTEM OF REPAIR FOR A DETERIORATED REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECK. THE SURVEY DRAWS THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: (1) REPAIR OF DETERIORATED REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS WITH THIN CONCRETE OVERLAY IS FEASIBLE, (2) BOND CONCRETE OVERLAYS TO EXISTING DETERIORATED REINFORCED CONCRETE BY USING CEMENT GROUT OR TEXAS HIGHWAY DEPT EPOXY A-103, (3) PREPARE EXISTING BRIDGE DECK SURFACES PRIOR TO RECEIVING THE CONCRETE OVERLAY, (4) DETERMINE IF THIN BONDED CONCRETE OVERLAYS INCREASE THE STIFFNESS AND THE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF THE LABORATORY BEAMS, AND (5) EFFECT OF CYCLIC LOADING, WITHIN THE WORKING RANGE, DID NOT CAUSE BOND FAILURE OF GROUTED OR EPOXIED CONCRETE OVERLAYS PLACED ON LABORATORY BEAMS.
