REPAIRS TO JOINTS
THE IMPORTANCE OF DETERMINING THE CAUSE AND NATURE OF THE VARIOUS FAULTS AT JOINTS (SPALLING OF JOINT EDGES, CRACKING NEAR JOINTS, DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT AT JOINTS, AND BLOW-UP OR COMPRESSION FAILURE AT JOINTS) IS EMPHASIZED. METHODS USED TO REPAIR EACH KIND OF FAULT ARE DESCRIBED: USE OF EPOXY RESIN MORTAR, OR CEMENT OR CONCRETE MORTAR FOR REPAIRING SPALLING, REBUILDING OF THE JOINT WHEN CRACKING NEAR JOINT HAS OCCURRED; TO REMEDY DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT, INSTALLATION OF DOWEL OR TIE BARS WHICH PROVIDE ADEQUATE LOAD TRANSFER; FOR A "BLOW-UP" AT JOINT THE METHOD OF REPAIR CONSISTS IN REMOVING ALL CRUSCHED MATERIAL TO ALLOW THE SLAB TO FALL TO ITS ORIGINAL LEVEL, RESEALING THE JOINT, AND REPLACING THE DAMAGED SLABS. /LCPC/RRL/
