DEICING SYSTEM FOR AVALANCHE PREDICTION
ONE OF THE KEY FACTORS IN PREDICTING AVALANCHES IN REMOTE MOUNTAIN AREAS IS RELIABLE WIND INFORMATION FROM UNMANNED WEATHER STATIONS. HOWEVER, SLEET AND FREEZING RAINSTORMS CAN BRING THE ENTIRE SYSTEM TO A HALT. A DEVICE DEVELOPED IN CANADA EMPLOYS AN ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED PROPANE HEATER WITH A UNIQUE DETECTOR DESIGN TO DEICE THE SYSTEM. IN OPERATION, A HOT SOLUTION OF ETHYLENE GLYCOL AND WATER FLOWS BY CONVECTION THROUGH INSULATED COPPER PIPES TO A PAIR OF COPPER RINGS ENCIRCLING ROTATING JOINTS OF AN ANEMOMETER AND WINDVANE, MELTING ANY ACCUMULATED ICE.
