FROST PROTECTION OF THE ROAD SURFACE BY OFF-PEAK ELECTRIC HEATING. INSTALLATION AT THE MOUND, EDINBURGH

THE MOUND, EDINBURGH, ROAD SURFACE IS HEATED DURING OFF- PEAK PERIODS BY BURIED ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS TO PREVENT ICE FORMATION. TIME-TEMPERATURE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROAD AND OPERATION OF VARIOUS CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR CONSUMPTION ECONOMY WERE STUDIED FROM NOVEMBER 1959 TO MARCH 1962. INSTALLED LOADING OF 16.6 WATTS PER SQ FT WAS CONCLUDED ADEQUATE FOR ALL BUT RARE SEVERE CONDITIONS WHEN DISCONNECTION IS ONLY TWO HOURS. FOR COOLING OVER LONGER PERIODS, HIGHER SURFACE TEMPERATURES AND INCREASED LOADING MAY BE REQUIRED. AIR THERMOSTAT CONTROL WAS DETERMINED INEFFICIENT FOR ROAD HEATING.
