EVALUATION OF PIGMENTED POLYURETHANES AND OTHER COATINGS FOR RAILWAY EQUIPMENT

This is a report on the performance of the alkyd-based (partly also acrylic and polyurethane) paint system used by Canadian National Railways on passenger cars and locomotives. It is shown that while there has been moderately good correlation between the laboratory tests described and the service performance of the alkyd coatings, these same tests are not entirely satisfactory for predicting the service performance of the more durable coatings such as acrylics and polyurethanes, particularly in railway applications. Generally, the service performance of the more promising coatings has been proven to be sufficiently satisfactory to be used on new locomotives.
