A STUDY OF TESTING VARIANCE IN SIZE DISTRIBUTION ANALYSIS OF COARSE AGGREGATE - FINAL REPORT
TO DETERMINE THE RELATIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SOURCES OF VARIATIONS IN COARSE-AGGREGATE SIEVE-ANALYSIS RESULTS, 15 COMMERCIAL TESTING LABORATORIES CONDUCTED TESTS ON THREE TYPES OF AGGREGATES: LIMESTONE, SAND AND GRAVEL, AND SLAG. A GRADATION CURVE APPROXIMATING THAT OF #57 AGGREGATE SPECIFICATIONS (AASHO M-43, ITEM 703, O.D.H. SPECIFICATIONS) WAS SELECTED, AND STANDARD BAGS WERE PREPARED FOR EACH MATERIAL. THESE SAMPLES WERE THEN DISTRIBUTED RANDOMLY AMONG THE LABORATORIES AND THE OPERATORS WITHIN EACH LABORATORY. RESULTS OF A PREVIOUS UNIVERSITY STUDY ON #57 AGGREGATE WERE EMPLOYED IN THE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE. THE ELEMENTS OF VARIANCE ANALYZED WERE MATERIALS, LABORATORIES, OPERATORS WITHIN A LABORATORY, AND INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THESE FACTORS. THE RELATIVE MAGNITUDES OF THE BATCH, INHERENT, SAMPLING, AND TESTING VARIANCES WERE ALSO EVALUATED FROM RESULTS OF THE PREVIOUS STUDY. INVESTIGATEION REVEALED SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE RESULTS REPORTED BY VARIOUS LABORATORIES; THE TYPE OF MATERIAL AND THE OPERATORS DID NOT HAVE A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT. THE ANALYSIS OF THE COMPONENTS OF VARIANCE REVEALED THAT BATCH, INHERENT, AND SAMPLING VARIANCES CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE OVERALL VARIANCE FOUND IN SIEVE ANALYSIS. THE RATIO OF THE TESTING VARIANCE TO THE OVERALL VARIANCE WAS SEEN TO BE SMALL FOR THE PERCENTAGE PASSING THE 0.5-INCH SIEVE BUT INCREASED APPRECIABLY FOR THE PERCENTAGE PASSING SIEVE SIZES NO. 4 AND 8. /AUTHOR/
