CRITERIA OF PRIORITIES FOR SECONDARY ROADS IN BRAZIL

THE NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR SECONDARY ROADS BEING CARRIED OUT BY THE NATIONAL BANK FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPEMNT IN AGGREMENT WITH THE BRAZILIAN NATIONAL HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT SINCE 1968 HAS BEEN IMPROVING CONSIDERABLY EACH YEAR. THE THIRD PHASE OF THE PROGRAM IS IN AN ADVANCED STAGE AND THE GOVERNMENT IS CONSIDERING SETTING UP AN INTER-MINISTERICAL COMMISSION FOR RURAL HIGHWAYS IN THE MINISTERY OF PLANNING AND COORDINATION. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COMMISSION WILL BE THE COORDINATION OF THE PROGRAM ON A NATIONAL SCALE. THE NEED TO DEFINE A CRITERION FOR ESTABLISHING PRIORITIES FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF SECONDARY ROADS HAS BECOME IMPERATIVE. THE DEMAND FOR SECONDARY ROADS INCREASES EVERY DAY AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE EXPANSION OF THE FEDERAL AND STATE ROAD NETWORK AND AS THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE PROGRAM REACHES COUNCILS LOCATED IN REMOTE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY. /RRI/
