USE OF ROCK TUNNEL MACHINES

The importance of geological and borehole surveys is stressed and the sharp effect of changes in rock strength on the rate of progress and cutter cost is illustrated. The developing trends of design in rock machines toward a more universal type capable of dealing with a wider spectrum of ground conditions is discussed together with other machine developments. The influence that the high speed of advance of soft-ground machines has had on the design of pre-cast concrete segments is described, and the modifications adopted for their use with rock machines is shown. An example is given of how the distribution of costs differs between machine drive and conventional drill and blast.
