SAFETY
Cryogenic fluids are stored, transported and handled in systems at super low temperatures. Safe handling of these liquids requires an understanding of the hazards which can occur. One of these areas is related to the properties of the fluids themselves while the other results from changes in the properties of materials of system components subjected to the low temperature environment. The hazard of a system is considered to increase as the system size increases. Super cooled liquid systems also present a hazard through the outleakage of vapor which may be flammable or toxic. Leakage of air into cryogenic system is also undesirable as it can cause explosive mixtures or line blockage through freezing or entrained moisture. All these items affect the safe design and operation of a cryogenic system. The accepted standards for dealing with these problems are discussed in detail.
