FURTHER EVALUATION OF THE SKID RESISTANCE OF MARTIN MARIETTA CORPORATION'S SYNTHETIC AGGREGATE

SKID RESISTANCE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON SEVERAL PAVEMENTS WHICH HAD BEEN CONSTRUCTED EXPERIMENTALLY IN ILLINOIS, MAKING USE OF AN ARTIFICIAL SILICEOUS AGGREGATE KNOWN AS SYNOPAL. FOR COMPARATIVE PURPOSES, A SURFACE ADJACENT, WHICH HAD BEEN CONSTRUCTED UNDER THE ILLINOIS I-11 SPECIFICATION AT APPROXIMATELY THE SAME TIME WAS TESTED. THE SURFACES WERE APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR OLD AT THE TIME OF TEST. A SKID TRAILER DEVELOPED AND USED FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS BY THE TENNESSEE HIGHWAY RESEARCH PROGRAM WAS USED. TEST RESULTS LED TO THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: (1) THE USE OF SYNOPAL AS A PORTION OF AGGREGATE IN A BITUMINOUS CONCRETE SURFACE INCREASES THE SKID RESISTANCE OF THAT SURFACE, (2) INCREASING THE PERCENTAGE OF SYNOPAL AGGREGATE EFFECTIVELY INCREASES THE BENEFIT DERIVED, (3) UNDER HEAVY TRAFFIC VOLUMES, KNOWN TO BE SUFFICIENT TO PRODUCE POLISHING OF THE PAVEMENT SURFACE AND BELIEVED TO MATERIALLY EXCEED 1 MILLION VEHICLES PER YEAR, PAVEMENTS CONTAINING AS MUCH AS 30% SYNOPAL AGGREGATE MAY SHOW REDUCTIONS OF COEFFICIENT ONLY HALF AS GREAT AS THOSE SIMILAR PAVEMENTS CONTAINING NO SYNOPAL, PARTICULARLY AT THE HIGHER SPEEDS, AND (4) REPEATED TESTS OF SYNOPAL PAVEMENTS INDICATE THAT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SYNOPAL BECOMES MORE NOTEWORTHY AS THE SPEED AT WHICH THE TEST IS PERFORMED IS INCREASED.
