POLISHED-STONE TEST FOR ROADSTONE
THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY TEST METHOD FOR MEASURING THE TENDENCY OF AGGREGATES TO BECOME POLISHED WAS USED TO OBTAIN POLISHED-STONE COEFFICIENTS ON A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF AGGREGATE USED FOR SURFACE CONSTRUCTION. RESULTS OF THE TEST ARE PRESENTED IN A TABLE. THE THREE QUARTZITES TESTED WHICH ALL HAD RELATIVELY HIGH POLISHED-STONE COEFFICIENTS ALSO HAD A HIGHER SKID-RESISTANCE. THE PRETORIA DOLOMITE WHICH HAD A LOW POLISHED-STONE VALUE HAD A LOW SKID- RESISTANCE. THERE SEEMS, THEREFORE, TO BE A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE POLISHED-STONE COEFFICIENT AND SKID-RESISTANCE IN SURFACE TREATMENTS.
