IMPROVEMENT OF SANDS AND GRAVELS FOR USE WITH ASPHALT

VARIOUS COMMERCIAL SURFACTANTS WERE EVALUATED AS AIDS IN THE BONDING OF ASPHALT TO MISSISSIPPI QUARTZOSE GRAVELS. PRESUMABLY SURFACTANTS SHOULD PRESENT A POLAR END OF THE MOLECULE TO THE MINERAL SURFACE OR TO THE WATER LAYER ON THE MINERAL, AND A NONPOLAR END SHOULD BE ORIENTED OUTWARD TO PERMIT BONDING WITH THE ASPHALT. AN AIR BUBBLE TECHNIQUE WAS USED TO INVESTIGATE THE RELATIVE EFFECTS OF POSSIBLE SURFACTANTS. THE CONTACT ANGLE (THETA ANGLE) WAS TO BE MEASURED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT IT THEORETICALLY REFLECTED THE SURFACE ENERGIES INVOLVED AND COULD BE USED AS A GUIDE. THE HYSTERESIS EFFECTS MADE THE AIR BUBBLE TECHNIQUE OF DOUBTFUL USE. A SESSILE WATER DROP METHOD WAS DEVELOPED, AND IT APPEARS TO PROVIDE A TECHNIQUE FOR RAPID QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION OF SURFACTANTS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE VARIOUS TYPES OF QUARTZ BEHAVE SIMILARLY WHEN TREATED WITH A SURFACTANT. THUS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO STUDY THE SURFACTANT EFFECTS USING A STANDARD PIECE OF QUARTZ. SEVERAL AMINES WERE INVESTIGATED, BUT THEORY SHOWS THAT THESE COMPOUNDS WILL DETERIORATE WITH TIME UNDER NATURAL CONDITIONS AND WILL NOT SOLVE THE ASPHALT BONDING PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS POINT TO FLUOROCARBONS AS POSSIBLE SURFACTANTS. IN THIS INVESTIGATION THEY WERE GIVEN ONLY PRELIMINARY STUDY AND EVALUATION. ASPHALT BONDING AND ASPHALT STRIPPING ARE TWO DISTINCT PROBLEMS. BOTH PROCESSES SHOULD BE STUDIED FROM A THEORETICAL POINT OF VIEW. /AUTHOR/
