CYCLIC CREEP OF GRANULAR MATERIALS

CYCLIC CREEP OF BASE COURSE MATERIALS CAUSES RUTTING OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS WHICH, IN TURN, DECREASES THE PERFORMANCE OF THE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT. A STRESS PATH METHOD OF TESTING WAS SELECTED AND USED TO PREDICT ELASTIC AND PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS MEASURED AT THE BRAMPTON TEST ROAD. GOOD AGREEMENT RESULTED. FURTHER TESTING INDICATED THAT THE RATE AND CHANGE OF RATE OF CYCLIC CREEP WERE FUNCTIONS OF THE MATERIAL, ITS DENSITY AND ITS MOISTURE CONTENT. THE CYCLIC CREEP WAS FOUND TO BE DUE TO THE CONSOLIDATION AND LATERAL DISPLACEMENT OF THE MATERIAL. THE COMBINATION OF THE CONFINING PRESSURE AND VERTICAL STRESS WAS FOUND TO DETERMINE THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CYCLIC CREEP. GOOD CORRELATION WAS FOUND BETWEEN THE MAGNITUDE OF CYCLIC CREEP AND THE VERTICAL STRESS RATIO. A LIMITING VERTICAL STRESS VALUE TO BE APPLIED TO PAVEMENT SURFACES WAS FOUND. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CYCLIC CREEP AFTER A GIVEN NUMBER OF LOAD CYCLES WAS FOUND TO BE A FUNCTION OF THE MATERIAL, MOISTURE CONTENT AND DENSITY. /CGRA/
