THE BENEFICATION OF AGGREGATES BY JIGGING

THE USE OF THE JIG IN THE BENEFICIATION OF MINERAL AGGREGATES IS COMPARATIVELY NEW. SOME EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN GAINED IN THE UNITED STATES IN THE ADAPTION OF DIAPHRAGM JIGS, AND TO A MUCH MORE LIMITED EXTENT, AIR-OPERATED JIGS, TO THE BENEFICIATION OF GRAVEL. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MATERIAL IS SEPARATED IN THE JIG IS STILL LITTLE UNDERSTOOD. IN CERTAIN PARTS OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO, AS IN MOST HIGHLY DEVELOPED AREAS, HIGH QUALITY MATERIAL IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY RARE. FACED WITH A POSSIBLE DEARTH OF SUITABLE DEPOSITS IN THE NEAR FUTURE, BENEFICIATION IS NOW A PRACTICAL REALITY. THIS REPORT DEALS WITH THE SUITABILITY OF A GRAVEL JIG FOR SURMOUNTING SOME OF THE AGGREGATE PROBLEMS EXISTING IN THE PROVINCE. MATERIALS WERE CHOSEN FROM DESOSITS IN SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO, WHERE THE PRINCIPAL CONTAMINENTS ARE TYPICAL OF THOSE TO BE FOUND. LABORATORY AND FIELD JIGGING EXPERIMENTS WERE USED TO ELUCIDATE THE EFFECTS OF JIGGING ON AGGREGATES. THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTS AND THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DEPOSITS ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. THE OPERATION OF THE JIG IS TREATED IN A THEORETICAL WAY, AND, OBSERVATIONS PERTINENT TO THE MECHANICS OF JIGGING ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THEIR THEORETICAL APPLICATIONS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE JIG COULD EFFECT SEPARATION, WELL ABOVE THE 90 PER CENT LEVEL, UNDER ESTABLISHED OPERATING CONDITIONS.
