DISPOSAL AND RECLAMATION OF SCRAP RUBBER TIRES
THIS ARTICLE BRIEFLY DESCRIBES EXPERIMENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN ON FRAGMENTIZING A RUBBER TIRE, USING THE IDEA OF REDUCING THE TEMPERATURE OF THE TIRE TO THE GLASS POINT OF RUBBER AND THEN SUBJECTING IT TO IMPACT IN A HAMMER MILL. THE TIRE WAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED, SEPARATING THE RUBBER FROM THE FIBER. THE CRYOGENIC FLUID USED TO LOWER THE TEMPERATURE OF THE TIRE WAS LIQUID NITROGEN. A GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF -80 F TO -90 F WAS DETERMINED. THE TIME NEEDED TO REACH THIS TEMPERATURE IS FROM 30 TO 45 SECONDS IMMERSION WITH A 30- SECOND DELAY BEFORE FRAGMENTING. THIS DELAY IS REQUIRED BY THERMAL GRADIENTS TO PRODUCE A UNIFORM TEMPERATURE THROUGHOUT THE TIRE. RECYCLING A TIRE BY THE REDUCED TEMPERATURE TECHNIQUE IS AT THE PRESENT TIME A VERY EFFECTIVE METHOD TO RECLAIM SCRAP TIRES. IF DEVELOPED FULLY THIS PROCESS WILL PROVIDE AN ECONOMICAL SOLUTION TO END THE WASTE OF RESOURCES LOCKED UP IN A DISCARDED TIRE. /AUTHOR/
