AGGREGATE POLISHING CHARACTERISTICS: THE BRITISH WHEEL TEST AND THE INSOLUBLE RESIDUE TEST

TWO METHODS OF ANALYSIS, THE BRITISH WHEEL TEST AND THE INSOLUBLE RESIDUE TEST, ARE DISCUSSED AND COMPARED FOR DETERMINING THE FRICTION PERFORMANCE OF AGGREGATE IN PAVEMENT SURFACES. EQUIPMENT, CALIBRATIONS AND DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURES ARE PRESENTED ALONG WITH APPROPRIATE TABLES SHOWING THE VARIATIONS FOR BOTH LABORATORY AND FIELD TESTS. SINCE AGGREGATE POLISH OR PERFORMANCE DEPENDS, TO A LARGE EXTENT, ON THE ADHESION COMPONENT OF FRICTION, STUDIES ON GRIT SIZE, SAMPLE VARIATION, PIT VARIATION, TEST REPEATABILITY, AND DAILY VARIATION WERE EMPHASIZED. FOR THE INSOLUBLE RESIDUE TEST, SAND SIZE AND POLISH VALUE WERE INVESTIGATED. ALTHOUGH THE BRITISH WHEEL TEST IS RECOMMENDED FOR PROVIDING THE FRICTION CHARACTERISTICS OF COARSE AGGREGATE MATERIAL, THEORIES ARE ADVANCED PRIMARILY FOR THE BRITISH WHEEL TEST.
