ZINC RICH PAINT
TEST RESULTS ON EXPOSURE OF ZINC DUST PAINTS CONDUCTED AT AVONMOUTH SITE (50 MONTHS EXPOSURE) AND BURRY PORT SITE (47 MONTHS EXPOSURE) SHOW THAT AN ACCELERATED RATE OF CORROSION EXISTS AT AVONMOUTH. DATA ARE SUMMARIZED IN TABULAR FORM: (1) PERCENT OF PANELS GIVING ACCEPTABLE CORROSION RESISTANCE A RUST RATING OF EIGHT OR BETTER, FOR CHLORINATED RUBBER AND CATALYSED EPOXY, INCLUDING THE PARTICLE SIZE, (2) TWO COAT ORGANIC SYSTEMS AT THE AVONMOUTH SITE; AND (3) APPARENT VISCOSITIES OF PAINTS AS A FUNCTION OF PIGMENT VOLUME CONCENTRATION FOR TWO SAMPLES. THE BEST CORROSION RESISTANCE WAS GIVEN BY LAMELAR EXTENDERS, PARTICULARLY LEAFING ALUMINING. CONVERTIBLE AND NON-CONVERTIBLE BUILDERS WERE EXAMINED; CHLORINATED RUBBER AND PHENOXY PROVIDED ACCEPTABLE CORROSION RESISTANCE.
