TIME-SAVING METHODS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING - CHAPTER 8: MATERIALS AND TESTS

SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS REPORTED INCLUDE: REPLACEMENT OF MANUAL TESTING WITH MODERN POWER EQUIPMENT, USE OF ASSEMBLY-LINE PROCEDURES, USE OF STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES, USE OF CROSS-INDEXING OF RECORDS, AERIAL PHTOGRAPHY FOR IDENTIFICATION OF SOIL TYPES, TOPOGRAPHIC FEATURES AND MATERIALS LOCATION, USE OF ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY METHOD FOR SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION AND SOIL LOGGING, USE OF TELETYPE, USE OF TRAINING COURSES AND INFORMATIONAL BULLETINS. THE VALUE OF PUNCHED-CARD METHODS IN COMPUTING AND RECORD-KEEPING TO FACILITATE ACCESS AND ANALYSIS, AND STATISTICAL CONTROL OF ROUTINE TESTING IS NOTED.
