SOME APPLICATIONS OF BORON TRACER TECHNIQUE (PART I) /IN JAPANESE/
A NEW TECHNIQUE EMPLOYING BORON AS A TRACER AND A NEUTRON MOISTURE METER AS A DETECTOR HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. BORON, WHICH HAS A LARGE ABSORPTION CROSS SECTION WITH RESPECT TO THERMAL NEUTRONS, IS A RARE CONSTITUENT OF SOILS. WHEN USED AS A TRACER, IT REDUCES THE COUNTING RATE OF THE DETECTOR. EXPERIMENTS WERE UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE RELATION BETWEEN BORON CONCENTRATION CHANGES AND COUNTING RATE. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE RATE VARIED EXPONENTIALLY WITH CONCENTRATION, A RESULT IN AGREEMENT WITH FERMI'S AGE EQUATION. ON-SITE APPLICATIONS OF THE TECHNIQUE ARE GIVEN, WITH BORON USED IN THE FORM OF A SOLUTION, A POWDER CONTAINING GLASS AND MINERALS, ALLOYS, AND OCCASIONALLY GASES. THE APPLICATIONS DESCRIBED ARE DETERMINATION OF THE QUALITY AND AREA GROUTED INTO THE GROUND, MEASUREMENT OF SOIL SETTLEMNT, AND MEASUREMENT OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF CONCRETE BATCHES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERWATER WALLS.
