NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTS FOR WELDS IN HIGHWAY STRUCTURES

THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF FIELD-PORTABLE EQUIPMENT FOR TESTING WELDMENTS IN BRIDGES AND OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES ARE DESCRIBED. SELF-CONTAINED X-RAY GENERATORS WERE DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO OPERATE OVER A LARGE RANGE OF KILOVOLTAGES (150-1000). THESE UNITS ARE CAPABLE OF RADIO- GRAPHIC INSPECTION OF STEEL WELDMENTS RANGING IN THICKNESSES FROM 1/8 INCH UP TO AND INCLUDING 2 INCHES WITH A SINGLE RADIATION PULSE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE USE OF THESE X-RAY UNITS BE INTRODUCED TO FIELD INSPECTION PROBLEMS. A PROTOTYPE WELD SCANNER COUPLED TO A RECORDING AND ULTRASONIC TESTING APPARATUS WAS ALSO DEVELOPED. THIS SYSTEM SHOULD BE USED PRIMARILY TO SEPARATE SOUND WELDS FROM QUESTIONABLE ONES IN ANY GIVEN RUN. FOLLOWING THIS SEPARATION, THE QUESTIONABLE WELDS SHOULD BE INSPECTED FURTHER BY EITHER MANUAL ULTRASONICS OR RADIOGRAPHY. THIS ULTRASONIC TECHNIQUE WOULD ELIMINATE THE LARGEST PART OF THE RADIOGRAPHIC INSPECTION NOW BEING DONE, BRINGING THE COST OF INSPECTION DOWN TO ONE-TENTH THE CURRENT LEVEL. /AUTHOR/
