SERVICEABILITY OF CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS
DESIGN CRITERIA WERE DETERMINED FOR CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS BY CORRELATING SERVICE LIFE TO THE NATURAL FORCES OF CORROSION OR ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS ARE USED. APPROXIMATELY 340 CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS LOCATED ON STATE AND COUNTY HIGHWAYS THROUGHOUT MINNESOTA WERE INSPECTED AND GRADED DURING 1966 AND 1967. THE INSPECTION AND RATING OF THE CULVERTS INVOLVED OBTAINING DATA ON PIPE AGE; PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDING LENGTH, DIAMETER, AND AMOUNT OF COVER OVER EACH CULVERT; ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS INCLUDING SOIL PH AND SOIL GRADATIONS OF BOTH THE DRAINAGE AREA AND THE CULVERT BACKFILL, AND FLOW CONDITIONS AT EACH CULVERT SITE. THE CONDITION OF THE CULVERT METAL WAS RATED. DATA WERE ANALYZED BY THE USE OF A MULTIPLE REGRESSION COMPUTER PROGRAM TO DETERMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CULVERT METAL CONDITION RATING AND THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, AGE, AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS. THE ONLY FACTORS FOUND TO INFLUENCE THE CONDITION RATING ARE AGE AND DRAINAGE AREA SOIL PH. AGE IS SIGNIFICANT IN ALL SOIL ZONES AND FLOW CONDITIONS EXCEPT THE DRY FLOW CONDITION OF SOIL ZONE FOUR. IN ADDITION TO AGE, DRAINAGE AREA SOIL PH IS SIGNIFICANT IN THE WET FLOW CONDITION OF SOIL ZONES 1 AND 2. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR THE USE OF PLAIN GALVANIZED CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS. /AUTHOR/
