WELDING ZINC COATED STRUCTURALS

INVESTIGATIONS WERE CONDUCTED TO DEVELOP AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL WELDING PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES FOR STEELS COATED BY GALVANIZING, METALLIZING OR ZINC-RICH PAINT. MECHANICAL TESTING SHOWED THAT THE PROPERTIES OF WELDS ON GALVANIZED STEEL WERE EQUIVALENT TO THOSE OF WELDS ON UNCOATED STEEL. CARBON DIOXIDE ARC SPOT WELDING AND ARC STUD WELDING WERE CARRIED OUT ON GALVANIZED STEEL AND CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THESE PROCESSES CAN BE USED SATISFACTORILY WERE DETERMINED. PROCEDURES WERE ALSO DEVELOPED FOR FRICTION WELDING GALVANIZED STEEL STUDS TO GALVANIZED OR METALLIZED PLATE. IT WAS FOUND THAT GALVANIZED STUDS CAN BE FRICTION WELDED TO GALVANIZED PLATE IF A POINT IS MACHINED ON THE END OF THE STUD, EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER GALVANIZING. THE OPTIMUM ANGLE OF THE POINT IS 120 DEGREES. GALVANIZED STUDS CAN BE FRICTION WELDED TO METALLIZED STEEL IF THE END FACE OF THE STUD IS MACHINED OR GROUND FREE OF ZINC. THE SUSCEPTIBILITY WAS COMPARED OF GALVANIZED, METALLIZED ZINC-RICH PAINTED AND UNCOATED HIGHER TENSILE STEEL TO HEAT AFFECTED ZONE CRACKING BY USE OF THE CONTROLLED THERMAL SEVERITY TEST. FOR WELDING OF B.S. 968 AND SIMILAR TYPES OF STRUCTURAL STEEL BY BASIC AND ALSO RUTILE COATED ELECTRODES, THE GALVANIZING PROCESS AS APPLIED TO THE CONTROLLED THERMAL SEVERITY TESTPIECES DID NOT INCREASE THE INCIDENCE OF HEAT AFFECTED ZONE CRACKING. WELDING PROCEDURES WERE DEVELOPED OF MANUAL METAL ARC WELDING FOR MAKING T JOINTS IN 1/2-INCH THICK STEEL TO B.S. 15 COATED BY GALVANIZING, METALLIZING AND ZINC-RICH PRIMERS. WELDING WAS CARRIED OUT IN THE HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL AND VERTICAL UP POSITIONS WITH RUTILE AND BASIC-COATED ELECTRODES. WELDS ON PLATE COATED WITH ZINC SILICATE, ZINC EPOXY OR WITH ZINC ETHYL SILICATE PRIMERS WERE OF EXCELLENT APPEARANCE, WITH EASY SLAG REMOVAL CONTAINED FINE POROSITY. FURTHER TESTS ARE BEING CONDUCTED TO DEVELOP PROCEDURES TO ELIMINATE OR REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF POROSITY AND TO MAKE SATISFACTORY WELDS ON GALVANIZED AND METALLIZED STEEL.
