PAVEMENT MARKING PAINTS: INTERIM REPORT

AN ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF STRIPING COSTS FOR PAVEMENT MARKINGS. PERFORMANCE OF FIELD TEST STRIPES OF 19 WHITE PAINTS AND 10 YELLOWS APPLIED IN THREE CONSECUTIVE YEARS ARE SUMMARIZED. EXPERIMENTS ARE DISCUSSED IN HEATING THE PAINT BEFORE STRIPING, PRETREATING THE PAVEMENT SURFACE, AND USING SPECIAL PIGMENTS. COST DATA FOR AN OVERALL ANNUAL PROGRAM SHOWED THAT NEW YORK SPENT AN AVERAGE 1.7 CENTS PER FOOT OF 4-IN. WIDE STRIPE. OF THIS COST, ABOUT 36 PERCENT WAS ATTRIBUTED TO THE PAINT ITSELF AND THE REMAINING 64 PERCENT TO BEADS, LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND OPERATIONS. THE MOST DURABLE AND ECONOMICAL WHITE PAINT TESTED WAS A MODIFIED ALKYD WITH A PIGMENT CONTAINING 40 PERCENT TITANIUM DIOZIDE THE BEST YELLOWS WERE MODIFIED ALKYDS, BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT CHLORINATED RUBBER. IN FIELD TESTS ON CONCRETE OF VARIOUS AGES AND ON BITUMINOUS SURFACES, NEITHER PAVEMENT PRETREATMENT (ACID ETCHING OR APPLYING A SYNTHETIC RUBBER PRIMER) NOR HEATING THE PAINT SIGNFICANTLY INCREASED DURABILITY. /AUTHOR/
