INVESTIGATION INTO SOME ANTI-CORROSIVE PAINTS
INDICATIONS SO FAR OBTAINED FROM AN INVESTIGATION ON 61 SELECTED COATINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS: (1) SAND-BLASTING OR GRIT- BLASTING OF STEEL BEFORE PAINTING WILL REDUCE SUBSEQUENT PAINT MAINTENANCE AND RENOVATION COSTS CONSIDERABLY. (2) IF POSSIBLE, PROTECTIVE COATINGS SHOULD BE APPLIED DURING DRY WEATHER. (3) EPOXY TAR, IF WELL FORMULATED, APPEARS TO BE A GOOD COATING FOR THE PREVENTION OF CORROSION. IT CAN BE APPLIED OVER ALUMINIUM METAL SPRAYED SURFACES, GALVANIZED SURFACES, ZINC METAL SPRAYED SURFACES AND STEEL, PROVIDED THESE SURFACES ARE CLEAN. THIS MEANS IN THE CASE OF STEEL THAT THE SRUFACE MUST BE SAND-BLASTED OR GRIT-BLASTED. (4) IF WIRE-BRUSHING OF STEEL IS THE ONLY METHOD OF PREPARATION POSSIBLE THEN RED LEAD IN OIL OR ZINC DUST/ZINC OXIDE PRIMING PAINTS USED IN A COATING SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE SOME DEGREE OF PROTECTION. (5) ANTI-CORROSIVE TREATMENTS AND PRIMERS ARE NOT SUFFICIENT IN THEMSELVES TO ENSURE LASTING PROTECTION. THESE MUST BE PROTECTED BY ADEQUATE OVER-COATING /A/RRL/
