A REVIEW OF INFORMATION ON THE EFFECT OF IMPURITIES ON THE CORROSION RESISTANCE OF ALUMINUM
WITH INCREASING SHORTAGES OF RAW MATERIALS, AND INCREASING DEMAND FOR LIGHT ALLOYS, IT HAS BECOME IMPERATIVE THAT THE FULLEST USE SHOULD BE MADE OF AVAILABLE SUPPLIES. ONE WAY OF DOING THIS IS TO AVOID ANY UNNECESSARY RESTRICTIONS ON IMPURITIES SO THAT SCRAP METAL CAN BE USED TO FULL ADVANTAGE. THERE IS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF OVERLAPPING IN THE MATTER OF WHICH ELEMENTS ARE TO BE REGARDED AS IMPURITIES AND WHICH AS MINOR CONSTITUENTS. CLEARLY, AN ELEMENT THAT IS ADDED TO ONE BATCH OF ALLOY MAY BECOME AN IMPURITY WHEN THE SCRAP FROM THAT ALLOY IS USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF A SIMILAR ALLOY OF SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT COMPOSITION. EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED ON ELEMENTS THAT ARE POSSIBLE IMPURITIES AND THE MORE UNUSUAL ELEMENTS HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH VERY BRIEFLY, USUALLY AT THE END OF EACH ALLOY GROUP. THIS REVIEW WAS COMPILED AND ORGANIZED MAINLY AS A REFERENCE WORK. IT WAS DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS COVERING THE GENERAL NATURE AFFECTING ALL ALLOYS, PLAIN ALUMINIUM, THE FIVE GROUPS OF WROUGHT ALLOYS, AND GROUPS ON CASTING ALLOYS.
