STRIDES IN NDT
PROGRESS IN NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT) IS SURVEYED WITH PARTICULAR APPLICATION TO WELD INSPECTION APPLIED TO AIRCRAFT, HIGH-SPEED TRAINS, LAUNCHING VEHICLES, AND SPACECRAFT. THE FOUR MOST COMMON METHODS OF NDT ARE RADIOGRAPHY, MAGNETIC PARTICLE, DYE PENETRANT, AND ULTRASONIC TESTING. RADIOGRAPHY IS EFFECTIVE IN EVALUATING BUTT WELDS, BUT IT REQUIRES ELABORATE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. IT IS A TOOL IN CHECKING THE EXOTIC METALS USED IN AEROSPACE COMPONENTS. TO RADIOGRAPH HEAVIER STEEL, BETATRONS AND LINEAR REACTORS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED. MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING IS EFFECTIVE FOR DETECTING SURFACE AND NEAR-SURFACE DEFECTS. DYE PENETRANTS ARE EFFECTIVE IN DISCOVERING SURFACE CRACKS AND FOR INSPECTING SEAMS FOR LEAKS. ULTRASONICS TESTING, THE LEAST USED METHOD, ALLOWS THE INSPECTOR TO PROBE FOR SUB-SURFACE DEFECTS, BUT ITS APPLICATION REQUIRES THE SERVICES OF A HIGHLY TRAINED TECHNICIAN.
