DURABILITY DESIGN METHOD FOR GALVANIZED STEEL PIPE IN MINNESOTA
THE DURABILITY DESIGN METHOD PRESENTED PERMITS MINNESOTA DESIGN ENGINEERS TO MAKE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE APPLICATION OF CORRUGATED STEEL PIPE IN THE VARIOUS SOIL CORROSIVE ENVIRONMENTS EXISTING IN THE STATE. THE PROCEDURES, METHODS OF ANALYSIS, AND RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF THE FIELD DURABILITY INVESTIGATION THAT IS USEFUL IN DETERMINING THE SERVICEABILITY CONSIDERATION PART OF OVER-ALL PIPE DESIGN. THE FIELD INVESTIGATIONS CONCLUDED THAT: (1) THERE IS AN IDENTIFIABLE AND PREDICTABLE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE PROVEN SERVICE LIFE OF CORRUGATED STEEL CULVERTS AND THE LOCATION IN VARIOUS MAJOR SOIL GROUP, (2) INTERIOR CORROSION ON A GALVANIZED STEEL CULVERT OCCURRED ALONG A STRIP USUALLY LOCATED AT THE INVERT OR AT THE TOP OF THE SILT OR WATERLINE WHERE THERE IS GREATEST EXPOSURE TO CHEMICAL-LADENED WATER, MOIST AIR AND OXYGEN, AND (3) WHEN A CULVERT IS INSTALLED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT CAN DRAIN OUT AFTER RAINFALL OR SNOW MELT, PERFORMANCE IS GENERALLY GOOD IN ALL SOIL GROUPS SINCE SUCH PIPES ARE NOT SUBJECTED TO THE SOAKING OF CHEMICAL- LADENED WATER. WHEN THE WIDELY VARYING SERVICE LIFE FOUND IN THE FIELD WAS ANALYZED WITH RELATION TO THE CORROSIVENESS OF THE SOIL GROUP IN WHICH THE SITE WAS LOCATED, THE CORRELATION AND ESTABLISHED PATTERN WAS DEFINITE, EXACT, AND UNDERSTANDABLE. WITHIN EACH SOIL GROUP THERE WAS DEFINITE CORRELATION ESTABLISHED BETWEEN SERVICE LIFE AND THE AMOUNT OF WATER EXPOSURE OF THE PIPE.
