USE OF RADIOISOTOPES IN DEVELOPMENT OF TEST METHODS AND FORMULATIONS FOR TRAFFIC PAINTS. PART II. HIGHWAY CROSS STRIPE TESTS OF TRAFFIC PAINTS, SERIES I
A LABORATORY ABRASION WEAR TEST WAS DEVELOPED BUT IT COULD NOT BE USED AS A RELIABLE MEASURE OF ROAD PERFORMANCE BECAUSE OF THE COMPLICATED INTERPLAY OF CHIPPING AND EROSION WHICH ACTUALLY GOVERN PAINT FAILURE IN SERVICE. VARIOUS PAINT FORMULATIONS WERE DEVELOPED AND EVALUATED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN IMPROVED PAINT PERFORMANCE BUT NONE SHOWED STARTLING ADVANTAGES OVER FORMULATIONS NOW AVAILABLE OR IN GENERAL USE. RADIOISOTOPE MEASUREMENTS BY MEANS OF A BACKSCATTER THICKNESS GAGE WERE NOT FOUND TO BE A CONVENIENT OR RELIABLE MEANS FOR MEASURING THE DRY FILM THICKNESS OF HIGHWAY PAINTS IN SITU. /AUTHOR/
