A STUDY OF FAILURES AND CATHODIC PROJECTION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE PIPES

CATHODIC PROTECTION OF PRE-STRESSED REINFORCED PIPES IS A FAIRLY NEW EXPERIENCE AND INFORMATION ON OTHER STRUCTURES SO PROTECTED IS EXTREMELY LIMITED. THE MATERIAL CONTAINED IN THE PRESENT PAPER IS BASED ON A PROGRESS REPORT, HENCE ESSENTIALLY INCOMPLETE. THE RESEARCH PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN FOR THE MEKOROTH WATER COMPANY LTD., WHICH IS THE OWNER OF THE PIPES IN QUESTION. IT WAS LAUNCHED IN NOVEMBER 1961 WITH A VIEW TO ESTABLISHING CURRENT DENSITIES AND PROTECTIVE POTENTIAL CRITERIA FOR PIPES IN SUCH CONDITIONS. IN CASE OF THE T-12 PIPE, IT IS INTENDED TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF APPLYING CATHODIC PROTECTION, IF FOUND NECESSARY AND POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION TO LABORATORY TYPE INVESTIGATIONS, RESEARCH METHODS IN SITU UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS WERE APPLIED, IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO OBTAIN ACTUAL CORROSION CONDITIONS, AS WELL AS TO EXPLORE PROTECTIVE MEASURES UNDER SUCH CONDITIONS. /AUTHOR/
