DE-ICING CHEMICALS CORROSION INVESTIGATION
A PROGRAM WAS CONDUCTED FOR THE METROPOLITAN CORPORATION OF GREATER WINNIPEG TO DETERMINE THE CORROSIVE EFFECT ON AUTOMOBILE STEEL OF A WINTER ROAD CONDITION INVOLVING' /1/ NO SALT, /2/ APPLICATION OF 100% SALT, /3/ APPLICATION OF SAND-SALT MIXTURE CONTAINING 10% SALT, AND /4/ COMBINED CONDITIONS OF NUMBERS 2 AND 3. AUTOMOBILES EXPOSED TO REPRESENTATIVE CONDITIONS OF DIFFERENT LOCATION WERE TEST SAMPLED, INCLUDING MILEAGE TRAVELLED, STORAGE CONDITIONS, ETC. PUBLISHED INFORMATION WAS EVALUATED, INCLUDING THE EFFECTS OF DE-ICING SALTS ON CONCRETE, ASPHALT, AND OTHER MATERIALS. THE REPORT IS PRESENTED IN TWO PARTS' PART I DEALING WITH TEST PERFORMED TO EVALUATE THE CORROSION OF AUTOMOBILE BODY STEEL, AND PART II DEALING WITH THE RESULTS OF THE LITERATURE SEARCH PERTAINING PRIMARILY TO PAVING MATERIALS AND CHEMICAL EFFECTS.
