ASPHALT PAVEMENT MARKINGS /PART 7/

ESTIMATES ARE GIVEN OF THE COSTS OF PAVEMENT MARKING WORK. AS TO REFLECTIVE MARKINGS, THE USE OF GLASS SPHERES WAS TESTED IN FINLAND ON THE MOST IMPORTANT PAVED ROADS DURING 1964. METAL STUDS HAVE PROVED MORE RESISTANT TO TRAFFIC WEAR THAN OTHER PAVEMENT MARKING TYPES. PLASTIC STUDS HAVE ALSO BEEN TESTED, AND THE SECOND TEST CARRIED OUT IN 1963-64 SHOWED THAT THE WHITE COLOUR OF PLASTIC STUDS CHANGED INTO GREY IN 3 MONTHS, AND THE LINE HAD TO BE REPAINTED IN ABOUT 1 YEAR. IN APRIL-MAY, 1964, THE TOTAL CONSUMPTION OF WHITE PAINT WAS 70,660 LITRES AND THAT OF YELLOW 27.385 LITRES. IF MARKING HAS NOT BEEN CARRIED OUT IN THE RAIN OR ON A DAMP SURFACE, NO WEARING OF PAINT MARKINGS BY CLIMATE REASONS HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN FINLAND. A LOOSE LAYER OF GRITTING SAND AND SALT FORMED ON ROAD SURFACE CAUSES WEAR ON PAVEMENT MARKINGS ESPECIALLY IN SPRING, WHEN SNOW AND ICE MELT AND THE SAND AND SALT LAYER COMES INTO DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE SURFACE. /RRL/
