CORROSION OF CORRUGATED METAL PIPE
A TOTAL OF 810 GALVANIZED STEEL PIPES FROM 7 TO 43 YEARS OLD AND 260 ALUMINUM PIPES FROM 4 TO 7 YEARS OLD WERE INSPECTED. USUALLY GALVANIZED CORRUGATED STEEL PIPES MAY BE EXPECTED TO SERVE 40 TO 50 YEARS OR LONGER UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS IN KANSAS. MOST OF THE SERIOUS CORROSION IN KANSAS OCCURS IN THE VICINITY OF EXTENSIVE COAL MINES, WHICH ARE USUALLY OPERATED BY STRIPPING. IN THESE RELATIVELY SMALL AREAS METAL PIPES SHOULD NOT BE INSTALLED. RESISTIVITY VALUES WERE MOSTLY BETWEEN 700 AND 2300; PH VALUES WERE NEARLY ALL BETWEEN 5.7 AND 8.5. WITHIN THESE NARROW RANGES PH AND RESISTIVITY DID NOT ACCURATELY PREDICT THE LIFE OF GALVANIZED STEEL PIPES, MANY OF WHICH HAD BEEN IN SERVICE CONSIDERABLY LONGER THAN THE PREDICTED LIFE AND YET WERE IN GOOD CONDITION. THEREFORE EVALUATION BY A METHOD SIMILAR TO THE CALIFORNIA CHART IS NOT SUITABLE IN KANSAS. /AUTHOR/
