EVALUATION OF WELDS ON UNPAINTED CORROSION RESISTANT STEELS

CORROSION OF UNPAINTED WELDS ON CORROSION RESISTANT STEELS IS REPORTED. A SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE INDICATES THAT MULTIPLE PASS WELDS WHICH ARE TO WEATHER TO AN AESTHETICALLY ACCEPTABLE RUST COLOR BLEND ON UNPAINTED STRUCTURES OF CORROSION RESISTANT A588 STEEL CAN BE MADE WITH ELECTRODE MATERIALS WHICH WILL PRODUCE WELD METAL CONFORMING TO MECHANICAL AND CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR E8018-C3 ELECTRODES SPECIFIED IN ASTM A316. SINGLE PASS WELDS CAN BE MADE WITH ELECTRODE MATERIALS CONFORMING TO ELECTRODE REQUIREMENTS FOR MULTIPLE PASS WELDS OR WITH ELECTRODE MATERIALS CONFORMING TO (1) ASTM A233 FOR E7028 ELECTRODES, (2) ASTM A588 FOR F71-EMXXK FLUX ELECTRODE COMBINATIONS, AND (3) ASTM A559 FOR E70S-6 OR E70T-1 ELECTRODES. /BPR/
