DURABILITY OF CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS
TO PROVIDE DATA ON CORROSION RATES FOR CORRUGATED PIPE, TWO SURVEYS WERE CONDUCTED -- ONE FOR STEEL CULVERTS WITH 2 TO 35 YR OF SERVICE, AND ANOTHER COMPARING ALUMINUM AND STEEL CULVERTS INSTALLED FOR UP TO 4 YR IN SIMILAR ENVIRONMENTS. UNCOATED STEEL CULVERTS ARE PERFORMING SATISIFACTORILY, BEING UNAFFECTED BY PROPERTIES OF NORMAL SOIL AND WATER, BUT WITH SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER DURABILITY WHEN BITUMINOUS COATED OR COATED AND PAVED. ALUMINUM CULVERTS ARE PROVING DURABLE, INDICATING NO NEED FOR SUCH COATINGS, ABRASION WAS FOUND TO BE OF MINOR INFLUENCE. A STATISTICAL METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR PREDICTING SERVICE LIFE OF STEEL CULVERTS. /AUTHOR/
