TIME-SAVING METHODS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING - CHAPTER 6: CONSTRUCTION
STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT RESPONSES TO EIGHT QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO WORK DONE BETWEEN PRELIMINARY STAKING AND THE FINAL MEASUREMENT OF QUANTITIES FOR PAYMENT ARE PRESENTED IN A TABLE AND IN A QUESTION-BY-QUESTION SUMMARY. THE QUESTIONS DEAL WITH STAKING, CROSS- SECTIONING, CONTROL OF DENSITY IN CUTS AND FILLS, COMPACTION OF BITUMINOUS SURFACES, SHORT CUTS IN INSPECTION OF PAVING PLANT OPERATIONS, AND RECORD KEEPING. OF PARTICULAR NOTE WERE QUICKER METHODS OF FIELD TESTING TO CONTROL DENSITY IN CUTS AND FILLS, BETTER INSPECTION METHODS AT BITUMINOUS PAVING PLANTS, AND EXPEDITIOUS RECORD KEEPING METHODS. THE LUMP SUM METHOD OF TAKING OUT BIDS MUST BE WEIGHED AGAINST THE MORE ACCURATE PRELIMINARY SURVEYS THAT IT REQUIRES.
