SIMPLIFIED RAMP DESIGNS PAY OFF
RAMP PAVING IS A SIGNIFICANT ITEM IN OVERALL PAVING COSTS. ON A TYPICAL 10-MILE SECTION OF RURAL INTERSTATE HIGHWAY OVER HALF THE PAVING TIME MAY BE SPENT ON TWO INTERCHANGE RAMPS THAT ACCOUNT FOR ONLY 10% OF TOTAL PAVING LAID (AS AGAINST UP TO 50% IN URBAN FREEWAYS). DESIGN PROBLEMS OF RAMP PAVING ARE DISCUSSED, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE FEASIBILITY OF USING MAINLINE INSTEAD OF SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT. AMONG THE FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED ARE (1) USE OF UNIFORM-WIDTH PAVEMENT, WITH TAPERED-SECTION LENGTH HELD TO A MINIMUM; (2) A SUBBASE OF SUFFICENT WIDTH TO SUPPORT THE TRACKS OF A 24-FOOT-WIDE MAINLINE SLIPFORM PAVER REGARDLESS OF PAVEMENT WIDTH; (3) ELIMINATION OF STEEL FROM RAMP PAVEMENT; (4) A STABILIZED SUBBASE THAT CAN BE USED BY CONCRETE DELIVERY TRUCKS; (5) GREATER TOLERANCE THAN FOR HIGH-SPEED MAINLINE PAVEMENT; AND (6) PROVISION FOR PINNING CURBS--WHERE THEY ARE CALLED FOR---TO THE PAVEMENT AT A LATER DATE AS AN ALTERNATE TO CONSTRUCTING THE CURB INTEGRALLY WITH THE SLAB.
